Can I share a little secret about getting the most fun from fishing? Using good quality equipment is a large part of the answer. There is nothing worse than have dodgy gear that lets you down and ends in frustration. I am going to show you three fantastic fishing reels that won't let you down. The reels can be used to catch fish in both saltwater and fresh water. Japan has a great reputation for making fishing reels so it probably will no surprise you that the manufacturers are Shimano and Daiwa.
Check this reel out; the Shimano Sustain FE 5000 spinning reel. The Sustain spinner weighs in at a lightweight 13.9 ounces. The Sustain comes in a variety of models. Reels in the range have different weight, line capacity, price and drag pressure.
Looks aren't everything, although on that count the Sustain scores high, but its functionality that counts. What this reel excels at is smooth operation. This is like the Holy Grail of all features when it comes to fishing. That’s because fishing is all about casting and retrieving and a reel that does this well is the angler’s best friend. Thanks to the propulsion spool lip design plus an innovative titanium coating, the line seems to float effortlessly off the spool. You immediately notice how much extra distance you get on a cast without having to whip the rod forcefully. As if that was not enough the reel also has an amazing drag. This does a very good job of taking the load of a strong fish with its smooth operation. Jerking is pretty much eliminated. The reel is so much fun when you hook up to a powerful fish. It absorbs the runs so smoothly without ever letting the pressure off.
You also come to appreciate how the reel eliminates line twist and that the bail arm doesn’t snap closed when you don't want it to. Moisture is effectively kept at bay by good quality seals. The handle is a stung one piece unit made from machined aluminum. This reel is not cheap at around $270 but the quality and fishing satisfaction it offers make it well worth the price.
Not everyone likes a spinning type reel. Or you may choose to own both. Well the Shimano Calcutta TE 400 is a top conventional style reel. This is a quality bait caster reel with levelwind, high line capacity, light weight, and fine drag adjustments. Although the price tag is high you only have to read a few anglers reviews to discover that your money is very well spent.
Not only is this a handsome looking reel, the fine finish is designed to resist scratching and to clean up easily. Of course good looks don't count for much without good performance. It shares one of the strengths found in the Shimano Sustain which is great casting. The Calcutta casts with silky smoothness. You will not find anything to fault the drag either. I don't know if it is the Dartanium material that makes the difference but the operation of the drag is so smooth without giving up the line easily. Even though the reel does not weigh much it still exerts a powerful 16 lbs of drag pressure This all translates to a whole lot of fun in your hands when you are fishing. The most satisfying benefit you get from this reel is being able to play and boat a 40 - 50 lb fighting fish.
As reflected by the price this is a top end offering. The reel exudes quality and features Shimano's most advanced technology. If you are wanting a reel that will continue to provide fishing enjoyment for a long time to come then this reel would be a good choice as long as periodic maintenance is carried out.
The final reel in our review is in a different class from the first two. The Daiwa Saltiga 6500 Expedition reel designed for big powerful fish. It its grunt that you are after this reel has it with 66 pounds of drag. Mighty impressive stats for a spinning reel. But if serious sports fishing is your thing then you are going to love this one. Equally at home hauling a monster fresh water bass, or a marlin out in the salt water this reel gets the job done well. One of the toughest materials available is marine bronze, and Daiwa have used a precision digital cutting technique to fashion this material for the main drive gear. This precision cut gear feature provides a perfect matching of the gear surfaces. This is housed inside a super stiff aluminum housing that is waterproof for reduced maintenance. There is a string of other features including 14 super corrosion resistant ball bearings, ultra-tuff one piece handle and a saltwater proof hyper-tournament drag.
There is a ton of cranking power with the handle and gearing setup and drag system is superbly smooth and strong. Any saltwater angler will appreciate the benefit of being able to wash the reel after use without danger of water getting inside the body. With the addition of a duct underneath the reel, water can pass through without causing any harm. Another great low maintenance innovation that will also extend the life of the reel. Its what you want to hear when you are parting with a large chunk of money to buy a top performing reel. Corrosion is probably arch enemy number one for fishing reels.
And that about sums it up. So for all you keen fishermen out there, if you are looking out for a new reel you wouldn't go far wrong choosing one of these three
