He should live near you.

If he lives 500 miles away, it will be difficult to get his tasks done. I know you have always pictured your best friend to be the one fixing your tie and patting your back on the most important event of your life, so you should consider the distance he needs to travel to help you on you big day.

He should be responsible.

This is the main characteristic that you should look for in your best man. You do not want to be the one who keeps reminding your best man of the deadlines and things he should do, do you? That would appear like you are demanding too much. You are the busy guy and he should have the initiative to offer help in whatever aspect he can to make it easier for you. Plus, the guy will be holding the ring for you on your wedding. That would be stressful for you if you know you cannot rely on your best man be well organized.

He should be organized.

This goes hand in hand with being responsible. The guy does not have to be extremely organized that he s bordering on having a breakdown, but he should at least be a person who is orderly and keeps a planner. Lots of planning and organizing are to be done for your wedding and your best man should be there to help you keep your sanity by keeping things in order.

He should be confident and fun.

It is quite challenging to find a guy who s responsible, organized, and fun at the same time but confidence and charm are equally necessary. Your best man will propose a toast and deliver a speech on the day of your wedding, and ideally he should also interact with many of the guests present at the wedding. He also plans for the bachelor party and drinks with you when you are getting tired of all the wedding preparation. So you see, the best man should be energetic and lively if you want this to be a fun experience for all of you.

You are lucky if you already have a guy who has all the qualities mentioned above. One difficult wedding decision is off your list. But if you still can t choose your guy, don t stress yourself too much. Remember, you can always appoint the rest of the guys to be your groomsmen and assign them tasks for your wedding.
